November 14, 2018

Blue River Dairy General Manager Robert Boekhout and Gareth Lyness celebrating the export award win.

Southland-based global nutrition leader Blue River Dairy was tonight (Wednesday November 14) announced as New Zealand’s Fastest Growing Exporter.

The Invercargill-based infant formula producer has recorded an overall revenue growth rate of 938 per cent during the past two years. During the same period the business’s growth in export revenue reached an impressive 1058 per cent.

Blue River Dairy was awarded the title at the Festival of Growth in Auckland, the culmination of the Deloitte Fast 50 awards – an annual index of businesses with the fastest growing revenue.

The company also picked up Fastest Growing Agribusiness and 4th Fastest Growing Company overall.

Blue River Dairy general manager Robert Boekhout said the award was recognition of an innovative team culture at the Invercargill plant and the vision and unwavering belief of chairman and group CEO Yuanrong Chen.

“We’re ecstatic about this result, which further cements Blue River Dairy’s status as a leading global nutrition business.”

It was exciting times in the export infant formula market as demand for quality products manufactured in New Zealand increased, especially in China, he said.

“We have used this demand and a global shift to alternative protein to significantly grow our business.”

The company’s phenomenal growth has seen it go from exporting 400,000 cans of infant formula in 2016 to being on track to reach 7 million cans this year– with a target of 15 million cans forecast for 2019.

A new canning line capable of meeting the 15 million can forecast is on schedule to be open in mid 2019.

Boekhout said Blue River Dairy was changing the face of New Zealand dairy with its production of cow, goat, and sheep milk nutritional formulas.

“We recognised opportunities in the nutrition market across cow, goat and sheep infant formulas and rapidly geared up our production to meet the needs of our customers who demand the highest quality products.”

The company is the only infant nutrition plant in the world manufacturing infant formula products from three species – sheep, cow and goat.

Blue River Dairy is launching an extensive marketing campaign in New Zealand and China to push its “Changing the face of New Zealand dairy” message.

Boekhout paid tribute to the Blue River Dairy team which has more than doubled from 50 to 110 permanent staff during the past 18 months. At least 20 more staff will be required when the new canning line opens.

“We have an incredible team consistently delivering to the highest level. We are proud of our success so far but we also recognise that we have a long way to go. It’s a competitive market and we will continue to differentiate ourselves by developing new products and categories for our customers.”

Blue River Dairy’s success was great business for local and national companies throughout the supply chain including dairy ingredient processors, storage and freight companies, packaging manufacturers, developers, laboratory, audit and other professional services.

“Our business growth is supporting many local and national companies, and providing our export service suppliers with huge growth in their own businesses,” Boekhout said.

Blue River Dairy experiencing phenomenal global growth

 MEDIA RELEASE

Blue River Dairy experiencing phenomenal global growth

August 9, 2018

Southland-based infant nutrition exporter Blue River Dairy plans to double sales next year through a new production line.

Invercargill City Council Chief Executive Clare Hadley recently toured the plant and said the Invercargill company was experiencing phenomenal growth.

Blue River Dairy General Manager Robert Boekhout said: “The past three years have seen us springboard from producing and exporting 400,000 cans of infant formula in 2016, to 2.5 million cans in 2017, to being on course to reach our 2018 target of 7.5 million cans.”

With the addition of the new canning line – Blue River Dairy was targeting production of 15 million cans in 2019.

To accomplish this Blue River Dairy, has doubled its permanent staff in the past 12 months, going from about 50 to about 105. At least 20 more staff will be required when the new canning line opens.

“It’s exciting that New Zealand’s fastest growing dairy business is sitting in Invercargill, providing secure, permanent, full-time employment to Southlanders,” Hadley said.

In 2017, Blue River Dairy was confirmed as one of New Zealand’s fastest growing businesses, coming in 10th on the Deloitte Fast 50 index.

With revenue growth of 445 per cent, Deloitte described Blue River Dairy as a pioneering infant nutrition business, which developed the world’s first sheep’s milk infant formula, and the only plant in the world producing different infant formulations using cow, goat and sheep milk.

“We’re known for sheep milk, but we’re an innovative infant nutrition business,” Boekhout said.

Blue River Dairy also won the inaugural Innovation in Export Award at the Export Southland Recognition dinner in September 2016, and picked up the Primary Sector Business Award at the 2017 Westpac Southland Business Excellence Awards.

Boekhout said the company had recognised an opportunity for significant growth by expanding into producing cow, and goat milk nutritional formulas.

“We believe we are the only infant nutrition plant in the world manufacturing three species products. We are very good at developing the market and delivering high quality, niche products into that market – and have steadily grown as a world leader in sheep milk products.”

Blue River Dairy had the ground-breaking for its new canning line construction project in February, extending the footprint of its Invercargill plant.

When Hadley asked about the company’s major challenges, Boekhout responded, “Recruiting enough staff to allow us to continue grow at such a rapid rate.

“I think we’re one of the most diverse workplaces in Southland. We have people from all sorts of backgrounds. This is why we are showcasing Southland as a fun, family-orientated and uniquely affordable, lifestyle region,” he said.

Blue River Dairy prided itself on having a great work culture where loyalty and dedication were highly valued – and the company’s low staff turnover rate indicated they had created a special environment, he said.

“New team members learn lots and we always try to have fun.”

Hadley said Blue River Dairy was actively recruiting in Southland, around New Zealand and globally to attract people to Southland.

“People can come into an area where there’s a job waiting, get a beautiful home, money in the bank, and be part of a great community,” she said.

Boekhout said they were encouraged by the expressions of interest and follow through of former Southlanders moving back to the region and people wanting to relocate for a significantly better lifestyle.

“We’ve got a really innovative, world-leading business here and we’re looking for the right people to be part of a unique New Zealand success story,” he said.

2018 New Year Greetings Official Launching of Blue River “Spring Plan”

Dear Blue Riverers,

Happy Lunar New Year! At this happy moment, Blue River firstly wishes all the babies around the world grow up happily and healthily. Meanwhile, we’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the friends from all walks of life that show concern for and support the development of Blue River. And we want to extend our best wishes to our colleagues and their family members in China, New Zealand and Italy. At the same time, we also pray for the goat, sheep and cow on Southland pasture in New Zealand and Sardinia pasture in Italy and wish them live freely and happily, and produce more premium milk! We must guarantee the safety, good quality and nutrition of our babies’ “ration” and put it as the ultimate goal of the company.

Blue River is an innovative and entrepreneurial dairy company, which actively practices China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative. In 2015 and 2016, we have acquired overseas factories one after another: Blue River in New Zealand and Alimenta in Italy, having achieved the strategic layout that Chinese enterprise controls the global sheep milk source and sheep whey protein core resources. In 2017, we dedicated to sales and marketing and achieved 2000mt sales in volume, successfully reaching the first year target of the “5-year 5-billion “development strategy. Nowadays, Blue River has become the leader in integrating goat and sheep milk resources in the world and created a new competitive pattern of sheep milk, goat milk and cow milk in infant formula market.

In 2018, as China ushers in a new era of better life, many new changes and new trends will appear in the maternal and infant industry, and the new retail of new era and better life (the new retail) is around the corner.

The new retail reflects firstly in nutrition upgrade and category replacement. Goat and sheep milk products will continue gaining double-digit growth, and category competition will become the market mainstream.

The promulgation and implementation of the new national formula standard will bring profound impact in promoting the development of the industry and the upgrading of nutrition and formula. Then a new wave-riding market is to come into being.

The new retail will reshape the people, goods, sales scenes in maternal and infant stores. Social interaction, empowering and efficiency are the core of the new retail.

Therefore, in 2018, the trend of nutrition and formula upgrade, category and brand replacement is irreversible. The “spring” of goat and sheep milk has come. The new national standard, the new formula and new retail will create new wave-riding market and products. Enterprises with multi-category, multi-brand, new formulas and new partnership empowering mode will be the first to obtain the market dividend in the new era.

A year’s plan starts with spring. In 2018, Blue River will promote healthy development of goat and sheep milk market and expand its market share through capital strength, scientific research and the power of partnership empowering.

He who wants to be strong must unite others. At this time of renewal, Blue River officially launches 2018 “Spring Plan” and fully implements company partnership policy. With the cultural concept and management mechanism of partnership empowering, co-existence, co-prosperity and mutual share, we want to make Blue River’s 5-year 5-billion strategy a shared vision and mission of all the partners.

Blue River’s partners include external business partners and internal company employee partners. Internal company employee partners come from different roles at the management team from pasture to table in the whole industrial chain; external business partners refer to suppliers and distributors and other external partners.

We are building South Island Infant formula factory in New Zealand and Alimenta infant formula factory in Italy. Correspondingly, the sales company of South Island and Alimenta have been established in China. Now, we start to fully implement the company partnership policy. With this policy, once an employee becomes an internal partner, who then enjoys a certain percentage of profit bonus coming from 15% of the sales company’s annual profit. And once a supplier or a distributor for example becomes an external partner, who then enjoys a certain percentage of profit bonus coming from 40% of the joint partnership unit’s annual profit. Blue River has developed the detailed mechanism of the partnership, with which the company’s development is closely linked with internal and external partners. In Blue River, the bigger your dream is, the wider your stage will become!

Having developed wave-riding products through capital strength, resource advantage and scientific research support of nutrition scientist and experts from New Zealand, Italy and China and created the partnership empowering mode, in 2018, Blue River wants to recruit internal and external partners from all around the world who agree with Blue River’s development and management ideas and harbor the dreams to join Blue River “Spring Plan”. To start a business in the maternal and infant industry is no longer difficult. By the end of 2018, Blue River will hold a grand “Partner entrepreneurs conference”, where all the partners will gather together to celebrate the harvest. Blue River is looking forward to your participation!

2018, Join us as a partner!

Thank you for your strong support, and wish you a happy New Year and all the best!

Blue River Dairy LP Gains CFDA Registration across Three Brands of Infant Formula

2 October 2017
Media Release

All infant formula manufacturers must register their brands and recipes with The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) in order to import their products into China beyond 1 January 2018, as the agency seeks to tighten market controls.
Applicants must demonstrate through a rigorous process that they adhere to strict standards throughout the supply chain to market quality and nutritious formulations. Each plant is limited to supplying a maximum of three registered brands, with each required to be significantly different.
Blue River Dairy LP’s Invercargill factory is the only plant in the world manufacturing three brands of formula with each using milk from three different species; sheep, goat and cow. Each range includes three recipes; Infant formula for 0-6 months, Follow on Formula for 6-12 months and Growing up Formula for 12-36 months. The strategy has proved successful with all three brands and all nine recipes officially gaining CFDA registration late Friday, 29 September (China Time).
The Blue River Sheep Milk infant formula range was launched in September 2015, and has carved out a growing niche with sheep milk sought after for its digestibility and nutritional profile. Blue River Dairy launched its premium cow milk based Mualps range in January 2017, swiftly followed by their Spring goat range in February 2017 providing parents more choice and launching the company on a period of rapid growth.
Blue River’s General Manager Robert Boekhout commented, “We are immensely proud of successfully registering not one, but three brands. Friday’s announcement represents the culmination of months of hard work by our team here as well as in China. It has been an arduous but welcome process which now provides opportunities for continuing growth. Unlike many of our competitors, we have retained all of our brands and are in a stronger position in market as a result of these regulations. This announcement bodes very well for Blue River Dairy.

Blue River Dairy was yesterday confirmed as one of New Zealand’s fastest growing businesses. At Deloitte’s Fast 50 regional event in Dunedin last night, Blue River was named the Fastest Growing Agribusiness and Fastest growing Exporter in the Dunedin and Lower South region.

The national ranking of each business on the Fast 50 index will be revealed at Deloitte’s Festival of Growth in Auckland on 9 November 2017.

Blue River began as a pioneering sheep milk company and has evolved into an export-focused infant nutrition business. Blue River continues to stand out for their niche sheep milk infant formula range, and have also increased throughput at the plant by introducing premium goat and cow milk based formula ranges in 2017. The strategy of providing choice has resonated well with customers and aligns with changing regulations in China, where each infant formula manufacturer will be limited to three brands from January 2018.

General Manager Robert Boekhout commented, “We’re proud of the outstanding growth we have achieved. Every baby is different and our customers have told us they want a choice of protein source. We’ve listened and helped thousands of parents find the right formulation for their babies’ digestive and nutritional needs. We couldn’t have kept up with the growing demand, without the tremendous effort of our talented team in Invercargill or the vision and unwavering belief of our chairman Yuanrong Chen.

What’s really exciting is that we’re only just getting started.”
